[ Back to Media ] Winter Festival of Lights is lighting the way to a GREENER Niagara! Niagara Falls, ON – Your visit to Niagara Falls just got a little greener. Today, Canada’s largest Illumination Festival has joined with LivClean Carbon Offset Solutions in its national initiative that helps businesses measure their carbon footprint, identify and fund reduction strategies and balance off their greenhouse gas emissions through carbon offsetting. “We’re very excited to be part of LivClean’s Carbon Offsetting Program,” said Dino Fazio, General Manager of the Winter Festival of Lights. “It’s a meaningful and effective way of demonstrating our concern for the environment, and complements our existing energy conservation efforts through the use of LED rather than incandescent lighting.” Under the program, WFOL will collect donations from both Festival sponsors and attendees, and use such funds to purchase carbon offsets in support of emission-reducing projects across the country such as renewable energy, sustainable farming, energy efficiency, composting and recycling - making the Winter Festival of Lights completely ‘carbon neutral’. The contributions offset 100kg of CO2-e (or carbon equivalents). That’s about the same as taking seven cars off the road daily. All LivClean Carbon Offset Projects are registered with the Canadian Standards Association’s (CSA) GHG CleanProjectsTM Registry ensuring ISO 14064-2 reporting and independent ISO 14064-3 verification. In addition, each offset tonne is uniquely serialized by CSA to ensure proper retirement and avoid double counting. The program also supports on-site environmental upgrades and renovations, further reducing the Festival’s impact. One tonne of CO2-e is created from these common activities; equivalent to driving the average car for two months, heating and lighting a home for 1.5 months or 35 hotel room night stays. Visitors to the Winter Festival of Lights now know that they are helping to significantly reduce these emissions. “LivClean offers a terrific program,” Fazio continued, “Regardless of the time spent in Niagara Falls, people are nonetheless seriously concerned about their carbon footprint when visiting our great community. This is our way of letting visitors know that we share their concerns and we’re doing something about it.” “We’re very proud of the offsetting program, and the businesses who have embraced it,” said Christina deVries, Director of LivClean. “Businesses like the Winter Festival of Lights are leaders in environmental consciousness and responsibility. They aren’t just talking about reducing green house gases – they’re doing it.” Details of the Winter Festival of Lights’ carbon footprint, in-house initiatives and carbon offset purchases are available on-line at www.livclean/eco-stay and www.WFOL.com/envirofriendly.html.
