Niagara Parkway – Aura
The Ontario Power Generation Winter Festival of Lights is one of the premier illumination festivals in North America with a 5km Illumination Route that travels along the stunningly beautiful Niagara Parkway, through Dufferin Islands and into surrounding tourist districts. The Niagara Parks Aura displays make up the largest section of the WFOL illumination route and is host to many of the Festival’s iconic displays.
At the base of Clifton Hill are a set of blue trees leading to the Oakes Garden Theatre, the Grandview Christmas Tree with presents and blue and red trees in the parkland. Moving towards the Falls visitors can see the iconic Zimmerman Fountain, Niagara Parks Duck Pond and Parks Police Building with Angels.
Queen Victoria Park is beautifully illuminated with a forest of tree-shaped displays in various colours. Behind these trees white blinking lights are spread across the moraine which resemble sparkling stars in the night sky.
The Niagara Parks Floral Showhouse building and surrounding grounds are brilliantly decorated with lights during the Festival.
Just outside of Dufferin Islands visitors can see the world’s largest illuminated Canadian-American Flag, at three-stories tall this displays morphs between the Canadian and American flags. The flag display was added to the Festival in celebration of 200 years of uninterrupted peace between our two great nations.
Completed in 1906 the Toronto Power Generating Station was a key piece to Ontario’s energy production through the first half of the 20th century. The plant closed in 1974 and in 1983 it was designated as a National Historic Site of Canada. In 2007, ownership of the plant was transferred to the Niagara Parks Commission who were tasked with re-purposing this spectacular piece of Canadian History. In 2015 seventy-two programmable DMX lights were installed onto this historic building creating a spectacular sound and light show.
